My Birchbox arrived while i was in the middle of moving last week, so i apologize for this post coming a little late.
I chose the new Benefit Gimme Brows number 5 as my sample instead of the featured box. I chose this for 2 reasons: 1) I’m trying to up my brow game as I have some sparse spots that need filling in and 2) the items in the featured box LOC One and DOne Shadow Stick, Davines Authentic Cleansing NEctar Har/Body, Deluxe + Authentic Moisturizing Butter, NUXE Reve de Miel Facial Cleasning and Makeup Removing Gel, Air Repair Complexion Boositng Moisturizer, The Beauty Crop PBJ Smoothie Stick) didn’t really appeal to me so I decided to take a chance and see what other goodies would come in my box.
Now that I have the box in my hands, I am thrilled with the Benefit item, excited about the Laura Gellar highlighter, and meh about the other three items.
The Benefit Gimme Brows is a brush that you swipe onto your brows to add more volume as well as definition. it is super easy to use (as evidenced by the Birchbox video in which Juliette and Lorelei applied it it using their phones as a mirror!), and really hard to over-do it. The little sample definitely won’t last long, but luckily I have a $55 in Birchbox points that I need to spend before I cancel my subscription. (After this box review I will go into the changes Birchbox is making on their points system and my thoughts on that).
The next item is another makeup item, from a brand I have a few pieces from: Laura Gellar New York Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator. I think this is a really underrated brand. I have a few pieces from her; face powder, blush, lipgloss and now this highlighter and all are superb quality and a pretty affordable price point. This particular highlighter is gold so it looks great on tanned skin, although it might be too dark if you have more pale skin
I also received the Evologie Intensive Blemish Serum. I really like skincare, but I haven’t been effective at introducing serums into my routine. However, the stress of moving cross country and then again within 1 month, plus the change in my schedule due to starting a new job, has really taken a toll on my skin so I’ll try anything that will help keep the breakouts at bay. This one can be used either as a spot treatment directly on pimples, or can be used as a preventative step applied as a thin layer all over the face. This product has amazing reviews in Birchbox, so I’m hoping it helps clear up my skin.
Next up is the PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing & Repairing Shampoo. Most people hate getting shampoos and conditioners separate, but I don’t really mind as I don’t use matching sets most of the time (except now, since I am in love with my Function of Beauty set which you can read about here). But for the most part, shampoos are just shampoos and nothing to get excited about. This will be a perfect item to toss in my travel bag for the next trip I go on.
Lastly, I received the Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream. This cream works both as a leave in conditioner and styling cream. I have a lot of hair-smoothing, frizz-taming products, and I use so little to prevent my hair from looking oily, so I really don’t need another of these. I love the way Oribe products smell and have always found they work well, so I think I will gift this to my mom as I think she would really enjoy it.
Now onto the points.
Starting in July, members can only earn points on the first five sample reviews. This means we can only earn a maximum of $5 from reviews. however, we can still earn points from purchases in the shop, by inviting friends and buying gift subscriptions. I don’t know how you feel about this, but for me, the points system was the only thing that set Birchbox apart from all the other subscription services, and the only thing that kept me around when the boxes were lackluster. As much as I’ve enjoyed being a member for the past 4 years, I think this change in their point systems is the final push I need to say goodbye to my subscription for good. I will have $60 in points after I review this months products, so I will buy an item or two and close my account. What do you think of the policy change?
